Kabale, located in southwestern Uganda, is known for its stunning landscapes and rich agricultural practices. Among its various agricultural products, mushrooms have emerged as a significant market player, providing both economic opportunities and nutritional benefits to the local community.

Mushroom farming in Kabale is primarily driven by the region’s favorable climate, which is characterized by cool temperatures and high humidity—ideal conditions for mushroom cultivation. The most commonly cultivated varieties include oyster and button mushrooms, which have gained popularity due to their culinary versatility and health benefits.

The demand for mushrooms has been steadily increasing in Kabale and surrounding areas because people are now health conscious with mushrooms having a high nutritional value, good taste, flavor and texture, and also the export potential to surrounding areas and urban markets including hotels and restaurants.

Despite the promising opportunities, mushroom farmers in Kabale face several challenges and have not been able to sustain the market and demand.
